World's Largest! COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Helps Another Offshore "Power Heart" Settle In.
On July 23, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers' 65,000-tonne semi-submersible vessel "Xiang Tai Kou" successfully completed the float-over installation of the Sanshan Island 2GW offshore converter station in the waters off Yangjiang, Guangdong. With a total weight of nearly 30,000 tonnes for this float-over installation, the vessel once again set a new world record for DP float-over installation weight by a semi-submersible vessel, following its successful transport of the "Sea Wind Heart" converter station in June.

The Yangjiang Sanshan Island 2GW offshore converter station, carried this time, is a seven-story steel structure with an area comparable to a football field, a height equivalent to a 15-story building, and a total weight of 25,200 tonnes. It is China's first converter station for an integrated offshore-onshore flexible direct-current transmission project. Upon completion and operation, the project will deliver green electricity gathered from the Sanshan Island Phase I to IV offshore wind farms directly to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, providing an estimated 6 billion kWh of clean energy annually, equivalent to saving 1.74 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 4.63 million tonnes. It will then become the world's largest offshore wind power DC transmission project.

To ensure the precise positioning of the "offshore power heart" weighing over 10,000 tonnes, the semi-submersible vessel project team of COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers coordinated in advance with the general contractor's project team to hold pre-loading coordination meetings, finalizing the DP float‑over installation window and all construction milestones, while simultaneously advancing supporting work such as jacket preparation and platform deballasting arrangements. The ship's crew also held a pre-loading meeting to carefully assign duties and emphasize safety precautions, ensuring that vessel position adjustments were completed on time and full preparations were made for the DP float‑over installation.
In the early morning of July 23, following two rounds of prudent assessments and dynamic adjustments based on real-time conditions, the operation officially commenced. At 07:12, "Xiang Tai Kou" smoothly entered the jacket slot. The DP team, consisting of two DPO captains and a DPO operator, closely monitored the bridge and, relying on the high-precision dynamic positioning system, adjusted the vessel's position and heading in real time, maintaining the optimal approach trajectory while continuously coordinating the on-site deballasting progress with the port captain. After half an hour of precise control, at 07:35, the converter station was successfully aligned; at 07:36, the vessel commenced ballasting; at 09:00, the entire load of the Sanshan Island 2GW converter station was fully transferred onto the jacket; and at 09:40, "Xiang Tai Kou" successfully withdrew from the jacket slot, marking the successful completion of the operation.
As with the previous transport of the "Sea Wind Heart" converter station, this operation relied on the high-precision dynamic positioning system equipped on "Xiang Tai Kou" itself, achieving centimeter‑level precise mating between the multi‑thousand‑tonne topside and the offshore jacket, and ultimately completing the entire "transport + installation" service for this high‑end offshore engineering equipment in one integrated process. This marks the 29th DP float‑over installation operation completed by COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers.
